In AD 636, a great battle was fought near the Yarmouk River, close to the present-day Syria-Jordan border, between the Muslim Arab armies and the forces of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire.

The decisive victory won by the Muslims ended Byzantine dominance over Syria. Yarmouk is one of the most important battles that enabled the rapid spread of the Islamic conquests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
