The Peace of Westphalia, signed in 1648, ended the Thirty Years' War and the great religious wars in Europe.

By institutionalizing the principles of the sovereign equality of states and non-interference in their internal affairs, it laid the foundation of the modern international system (the "Westphalian order"). It is regarded as the origin of today's concepts of the nation-state and sovereignty.
