The Ubaid period is a cultural phase that developed in Southern Mesopotamia from about the middle of the 6th millennium BCE onward and is known for its distinctive painted pottery.

During this period, settlements based on irrigated agriculture grew, structures thought to have served a temple function emerged, and social organization became more complex. The Ubaid culture is regarded as an important stage that laid the ground for the later Uruk period and for Mesopotamian urbanization.
