After the Ottoman army suffered a heavy defeat against Timur at the Battle of Ankara in 1402 and Sultan Bayezid I was taken captive, central authority in the state collapsed.

A struggle for the throne began among Bayezid's sons, and this period came to be known as the Interregnum. At the end of roughly a decade of internal strife, Mehmed I restored unity.
