Sykes-Picot Agreement

The Sykes-Picot Agreement was an arrangement made secretly in 1916, during the First World War, between Britain and France, with the knowledge of Russia as well, which provided for the division of the Ottoman State's Arab territories in the Middle East into postwar spheres of influence.

The agreement divided the region into zones of direct control and influence of the two powers. Its subsequent disclosure to the public drew reaction. Sykes-Picot is regarded as one of the arrangements that were influential in shaping the borders of the modern Middle East.
