Collapse of the Soviet Union

Following the failed coup attempt in August, the central administration rapidly weakened; the republics declared their independence. With the establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States in December and the resignation of Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union formally came to an end. This development brought about the end of a state of roughly seventy years and symbolized the closing of the Cold War period.
