Through his dialogical method based on continuous questioning, he investigated concepts such as virtue, knowledge, and justice. In Athens he was put on trial on the grounds that he had corrupted the youth and shown disrespect to the city's gods; as a result of the trial he was condemned to death and died by drinking hemlock. His ideas were transmitted through his followers, foremost among them his student Plato.
