Coronation of Charlemagne

800 CE · Roma · political

At Christmas in the year 800, Pope Leo III crowned the Frankish King Charlemagne as "Emperor of the Romans" in Rome.

This event revived the idea of empire in the West, fused the Latin Church with Frankish power, and challenged Byzantium's claim to universal empire. It is considered one of the foundations of the tradition of the Holy Roman Empire and of Europe's political identity.
