The Sarajevo assassination was the killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife in the Bosnian city of Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 by the Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip.

The assassination led Austria-Hungary to issue an ultimatum to Serbia with severe demands. With the activation of the alliance systems, tensions escalated rapidly and the great powers were drawn into war. The assassination is generally regarded as the spark that triggered the First World War.
