The abolition of the sultanate took place by a decision of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on 1 November 1922.

Following the military victory of the War of Independence, the Ottoman institution of the sultanate was brought to an end in accordance with the principle of national sovereignty. With this decision, the centuries-long Ottoman dynastic rule was politically abolished; the last sultan left the country shortly thereafter. The abolition of the sultanate was one of the important stages of the fundamental political transformation in Turkey leading toward the republic.
