Fall of the Safavids

1722 CE · İran · fall

The collapse of the Safavid state became evident in 1722 when the capital, Isfahan, was besieged and captured by Afghan forces.

Shaken for a long time by internal turmoil and the weakening of central authority, the state was driven into a deep crisis. This development led to political fragmentation in Iran and ushered in a period that paved the way for Ottoman and Russian interventions in the region and for the rise of Nader Shah.
