In 1994, in attacks directed by extremist elements among the Hutu majority in Rwanda, hundreds of thousands of people, foremost among them the Tutsi minority, were killed within a short period.

This mass violence, lasting about three months, went down in history as one of the most rapidly carried out genocides of the 20th century.
