The Paris Climate Agreement was adopted in December 2015 within the framework of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21).

The agreement aimed to keep the rise in global average temperature well below 2°C compared to the pre-industrial period and, if possible, to limit it to 1.5°C. With numerous countries as parties, the agreement provided for states to set nationally determined contributions toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and is regarded as a turning point in global climate policy.
