Ottoman Entry into WWI

1914 CE · İstanbul · political

The Ottoman Empire entered the First World War in the autumn of 1914 on the side of the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary).

At the beginning of the war, a secret alliance had been signed between the Ottoman Empire and Germany. The bombardment of Russian ports by ships under the command of the Ottoman navy led to a de facto state of war, and the Entente Powers declared war on the Ottoman Empire. This decision drew the empire into a long and exhausting war on many fronts and ultimately accelerated the process of its disintegration.
