In the mid-14th century, the Ottoman Beylik began to establish a permanent presence on the European shore by crossing from the area around the Dardanelles into Rumelia (the Balkans).

The capture of settlements in the region of Gallipoli is considered the beginning of this process. This crossing laid the foundation for the Ottomans becoming a Balkan and European power.
