On 6 June 1944, the Allied forces carried out a large-scale landing operation on the Normandy coast of German-occupied France.

This operation, known as D-Day (Operation Overlord), became one of the largest sea-to-land landing operations in history. American, British, Canadian, and other Allied units succeeded in establishing a foothold on the beaches. The landing marked the beginning of the process of liberating Western Europe from German occupation.
