In 1396, the Ottoman forces and a Crusader army gathered from Europe confronted one another before Nicopolis (Niğbolu), on the banks of the Danube.

The Ottoman army commanded by Bayezid the Thunderbolt (Yıldırım Bayezid) won a decisive victory. The battle is regarded as the failure of one of Europe's attempts to halt the Ottoman advance.
