Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign

1798 CE · military

The French army under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte organized an expedition to Egypt in 1798.

During the campaign, which aimed to threaten Britain's route to India and to increase French influence in the region, clashes such as the Battle of the Pyramids took place. Thanks to the scholars brought along with it, the expedition became the occasion for the study of Egypt and the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. However, owing to the defeat of the French navy at Aboukir and other difficulties, the expedition ultimately ended in failure.
