Nader Shah's Invasion of India

1739 CE · military

Nader Shah, ruler of the Afsharid dynasty, captured Delhi, the capital of the Mughal Empire, in 1739.

Having defeated the Mughal army at the Battle of Karnal, Nader Shah entered the city, and upon the events that broke out afterward a great plunder and massacre took place. The expedition resulted in the transport to Iran of valuable spoils such as the Peacock Throne and the Koh-i-Noor diamond. It became an important turning point in the weakening of the Mughal Empire and in the dissolution of central authority in India.
