Marmaray, which connects the Asian and European sides to each other through a railway tunnel passing beneath the Bosphorus, was opened to service on 29 October 2013.

The project was built using the immersed tube tunnel technique, in which the tunnel was placed on the seabed of the strait, and it joined rail-based public transport lines continuously across the continents. During the excavations, archaeological finds shedding light on the region's history were uncovered. Marmaray is a large-scale engineering project in terms of Istanbul's transportation infrastructure.
