Partitions of Poland

1795 CE · political

The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was partitioned in three stages at the end of the eighteenth century by the neighboring powers Russia, Prussia, and Austria.

With the third and final partition in 1795, the country was entirely eliminated and its territory divided among these three states. Thus the independent Polish state was erased from the map, a situation that lasted until the early twentieth century. The partitions were events that reflected the balance of power of the period and deeply affected Central-Eastern Europe.
