The War of Independence is the national resistance and struggle for independence, beginning in 1919, waged against the occupations in Anatolia and its surroundings.

The movement, organized through Mustafa Kemal's landing at Samsun in 1919 and the congresses held thereafter, gained a political center with the opening of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in Ankara in 1920. Throughout the war, clashes took place on the eastern, southern, and western fronts; the struggle waged against the Greek forces in the west was decisive, and the process concluded with the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923.
