On the night of 9-10 November 1938, organized acts of violence against Jews were carried out throughout Nazi Germany and annexed Austria.

In the events known as Kristallnacht (the Night of Broken Glass), numerous synagogues were set on fire, and Jewish-owned businesses and homes were destroyed; the broken shop windows gave the event its name. Many Jews were killed, and tens of thousands were sent to concentration camps. These events are regarded as a stage at which the regime's persecution of Jews turned into open violence.
