In the events known as Kristallnacht (the Night of Broken Glass), numerous synagogues were set on fire, and Jewish-owned businesses and homes were destroyed; the broken shop windows gave the event its name. Many Jews were killed, and tens of thousands were sent to concentration camps. These events are regarded as a stage at which the regime's persecution of Jews turned into open violence.
