2023 CE · Kızıldeniz / Bab-ül Mendep · military

The Yemen-based Houthis began attacking Israel-linked ships in the Red Sea from 19 November 2023.

From 12 January 2024, a coalition led by the United States and the United Kingdom (Operation Poseidon Archer) conducted air and missile strikes against Houthi targets. In 2024, ships such as the Rubymar and the MV Tutor sank; the attacks expanded to include U.S.-, UK-, and Israel-linked ships. According to the Pentagon, between 15 March and 6 May 2025 the United States struck more than 1,000 Houthi targets, killing at least 250 people. The attacks paused and resumed in connection with the Gaza ceasefires; the Houthis announced on 28 February 2026 that they had resumed their attacks following the U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran.
