Women’s Suffrage in Local Elections (Turkey)

1930 CE · Türkiye · political

By the legal regulation enacted in Turkey in 1930, women were granted the right to vote in municipal elections.

The Municipal Law of 1930 enabled women to be voters in local government elections, and this constituted an important stage in the process of the gradual expansion of women's political rights during the Republican period. This step was followed in subsequent years by the right to participate in elections for village headmen and councils of elders (1933) and finally in parliamentary elections (1934).
