1945 CE · Tokyo Körfezi · political

In August 1945, Japan decided to surrender unconditionally to the Allies, thereby bringing the Second World War to an end.

This decision, which came after the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet Union's declaration of war on Japan, is known as V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day). Japan's instrument of surrender was signed on 2 September 1945. This development symbolized the formal close of the Pacific front of the war and of the Second World War in general.
