Hipparchus of Nicaea (Iznik) was a Greek astronomer and mathematician who lived in the 2nd century BCE and is regarded as one of the most important figures of ancient astronomy.

He is said to have systematically measured the positions of stars, compiled a star catalog, and detected the precession (shifting) of the equinoxes. He profoundly influenced later astronomers through his contributions to positional astronomy and trigonometry.
