British Raj Established

Following the major uprising that had broken out the previous year, the administration that had until then been carried out through the East India Company was brought to an end. By this arrangement, the governance of India was transferred directly to the British Crown and government. Thus company rule gave way to formal colonial administration, and the period of direct colonial rule that would continue over the following decades began.
