Haitian Revolution

1791 CE · political

The Haitian Revolution began in 1791 with the uprising of enslaved Africans in the French colony of Saint-Domingue.

The long and bloody struggle, in which leaders such as Toussaint Louverture came to prominence, finally resulted in the establishment of the independent state of Haiti in 1804. This went down in history as the first independent state established as the result of a successful slave uprising. The revolution profoundly influenced debates over slavery and colonialism and resonated widely across the American continent.
