The Gregorian calendar reform was proclaimed in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII.

In order to correct the deviation of the Julian calendar then in use from the solar year, the leap year rules were rearranged and several days were removed from the calendar. The reform was first applied in Catholic countries; other countries adopted it on different dates. This calendar is today widely used throughout the world.
