The First French Republic was proclaimed in 1792 following the abolition of the monarchy.

In a period in which the French Revolution had become radicalized, the National Convention ended the monarchy and passed to republican government. Shortly afterward, King Louis XVI was tried and executed. The proclamation of the republic caused great upheaval both within France and across Europe and led to an increase in conflicts with other monarchies. This period was an important stage of revolutionary transformation.
