Fashoda Incident

1898 CE · political

The Fashoda Incident was a colonial dispute that occurred in 1898 between Britain and France around the town of Fashoda in the Upper Nile region.

As the reconnaissance unit under the command of the French Major Marchand reached the area, the forces of the British General Kitchener also moved toward the same region. In the crisis, which did not turn into direct conflict, France agreed to withdraw. The event is regarded as one of the last serious tensions of the colonial rivalry between the two countries and prepared the ground for a rapprochement in the following years.
