The election in which the president of Turkey was directly elected by popular vote for the first time was held in August 2014.

Whereas the president had previously been elected by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, after the constitutional amendment made by the 2007 referendum this authority passed to the voters. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan won the election in the first round. This election represents an important change in Turkey's political system with regard to the method of electing the office of the president.
