Eratosthenes Measures the Earth

240 BCE · İskenderiye · science

Eratosthenes of Cyrene was a Greek scholar who headed the Library of Alexandria in the 3rd century BCE.

He is known to have calculated the circumference of the Earth by making use of the difference in the angle at which the Sun's rays strike the ground in different cities and the distance between those cities. Although the exact equivalent of the units used is disputed, the value he arrived at is considered to be quite close to the true figure; this work is among the pioneering examples of mathematical geography.
