Discovery of the DNA Double Helix

1953 CE · Birleşik Krallık · science

In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick published the model explaining the double helix structure of the DNA molecule.

The work also drew on the X-ray diffraction data of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. This discovery became a fundamental milestone in understanding how hereditary information is stored and copied, and it opened the way for the development of modern molecular biology and genetics. For this work, Watson, Crick, and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962.
