1918 CE · Compiègne, Fransa · political

The Armistice of Compiegne was the agreement that ended the fighting in the First World War, signed in a railway carriage near Compiegne in France on 11 November 1918.

The armistice, signed between Germany and the Entente Powers, brought about the cessation of combat on the Western Front and effectively confirmed Germany's defeat. The legal termination of the war, however, was accomplished by the peace treaties signed a year later. The 11th of November has been recognized as a day of commemoration in many countries.
