Cast iron production began to spread in China during the late Zhou and Warring States periods, around the middle of the 1st millennium BCE.

The melting and casting of iron into molds using techniques resembling blast furnaces facilitated the mass production of agricultural implements and other tools. It is generally accepted that this technology developed much earlier in China than in Europe.
