Algeria Gains Independence

Following the long and violent war of independence that had begun in 1954, the negotiations that were held concluded with the agreements known as the Évian Accords, and after a referendum was held, Algeria's independence was officially recognized. This development marked the end of France's colonial presence in North Africa and constituted one of the important turning points of the twentieth-century decolonization process.
