Bosnian War Begins

1992 CE · Bosna-Hersek · war

In 1992, after Bosnia and Herzegovina declared its independence from the former Yugoslavia, war broke out in the country among the Bosniak, Serb, and Croat communities.

One of the bloodiest conflicts in the process of Yugoslavia's dissolution, the war lasted about three and a half years and was marked by practices of ethnic cleansing, sieges, and large civilian losses. The conflicts ended with the 1995 Dayton Agreement. Some of the events during the war have been characterized as genocide by international courts.
