In 1945, with the end of World War II, the United Nations was founded in order to maintain international peace and security.

The UN Charter, prepared at the conference held that same year in San Francisco, was signed by the founding states, and the organization officially began to operate. The United Nations became the principal international organization aiming to develop cooperation among states, to resolve disputes by peaceful means, and to protect human rights.
