Berlin Blockade and Airlift

1948 CE · military

In 1948, the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin, which was under the control of the Western Allies, by cutting off all land and rail connections reaching the city.

In response, the United States and its allies established a large-scale airlift to meet West Berlin's needs, transporting supplies and fuel to the city through flights lasting for months. The blockade was lifted in 1949. The Berlin Blockade is regarded as one of the first major crises of the Cold War.
