In 1885 the German engineer Karl Benz developed a three-wheeled vehicle powered by an internal-combustion gasoline engine and conceived from the outset as an automobile.

Generally regarded as one of the first examples of the modern automobile, the vehicle was patented the following year. During the same period, engineers such as Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were also working on motor vehicles. Benz's work is considered one of the foundational steps in the birth of the automotive industry.
