Hagia Sophia, built in Constantinople between 532 and 537 during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, was regarded as the pinnacle of Late Antique engineering with its enormous dome.

For a thousand years it was the largest cathedral in the world and the center of Eastern Christianity; in 1453 it was converted into a mosque, in later centuries into a museum, and then again into a mosque. It is considered a masterpiece of domed structures in the history of architecture.
