As a result of the election, the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) obtained a majority sufficient to govern on its own. The coalition governments of the preceding period and the economic crisis experienced in 2001 were considered among the main factors influencing the election results. Because of the ten percent electoral threshold, only two parties entered Parliament. This election marked the beginning of a new process that would leave its mark on a long period in Turkish politics.
