United States Constitution Drafted

1787 CE · Philadelphia · political

The United States Constitution was drafted in 1787 at the Constitutional Convention assembled in Philadelphia.

The delegates, who had gathered in response to the inadequacy of the former Articles of Confederation, established a federal system of government based on the separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The text entered into force after ratification by the states. The first ten amendments, securing individual rights, were added later. This constitution became an influential model for modern republican forms of government.
