Xinhai Revolution

1911 CE · political

The Xinhai Revolution was a series of uprisings that began in China in 1911 and put an end to the imperial rule that had lasted for centuries.

The movement, which began with the military uprising at Wuchang in October 1911, spread rapidly. The revolution resulted in the overthrow of the Manchu-origin Qing Dynasty; the Republic of China was proclaimed in early 1912, and Sun Yat-sen became provisional president. The last emperor, Puyi, abdicated the throne. The revolution ended a dynastic tradition in China spanning more than two thousand years; the country, however, experienced political fragmentation for a long time.
